Matt Irwin, founder of Less Common and acclaimed photographer answered a few questions. Shooting the likes of Alice Dellal and Agyness Deyn, as well as many Dazed and Confused covers, see what he has on his mind……below. By Yale Breslin.
Tell us a little bit about LESS COMMON, the magazine you started. What was the original vision and how has it changed since it began?
It began as a college project. I just wanted to do something good, there was so much crap floating around so I just made my own. Me and a couple of friends did 5 issues and then we all started doing our own things. It was very much of the time, it felt right at the time.
What specific aspects of London culture inspire your works?
The history, the Punk attitude, the DIY approach to life. The miserable
weather!
What is your role at Dazed and Confused magazine? How did you end up there?
I went in to edit the front section. The creative director Nicola Formichetti got me involved. But then I started doing more photography and began to concentrate just on that. I was made staff photographer and now I contribute on a freelance basis.
You have described your shots as quite honest. What do you think needs to be achieved in order to get “the” shot?
You and the person you’re shooting have to be into it. There is really no point otherwise.
What have you been working on lately?
More moving image/film. I’ve been shooting a lot for Russian and Japanese Vogue too which is really cool.
What inspires you?
Old Westwood pictures I love the Savages collection, it always gets me going. Old music videos. Thierry Mugler.Youth.Hamburgers.
What designers/musicians/artists are currently on your radar?
I’m having a retrospective period at the moment, lots of Siouxsie ,The Cure, The Smiths ,Bow Wow Wow. I’m still trying to get over how amazing Westwood is. All those kids walking around the Kings Road in the 70s in bondage gear is beyond, I love it/her.
In five years, I see myself……?
With huge breasts living a life of luxury in the Hollywood Hills.
