Dejour talks with Donald of The Virgins about selling out, touring with JET and loosing his virginity. By Kyle Morrison.  Photo: David Black

Where did you guys come up with the name for the band?

It was a really serious brainstorm session.

Who did you lose your virginity to?

I actually shouldn’t say that, but she was a little bit older than me and it was pretty awesome. I lost my virginity late. I lost my virginity when I was seventeen. All my friends started having sex when they were fourteen and I didn’t go through puberty until I was sixteen and a half, so all my friends were having all this sex and I was like “yeah, me too, me too.” (Laughs). I’m like “Yeah, I’m having so much sex”, but it wasn’t true, so finally when I was seventeen, I was going out with this girl for forever and we were very much in love and she was my first real girlfriend and she broke up with me. We were supposed to lose our virginity together but we never did, so two days later I went and lost it with some other girl.

What’s your favorite song right now?

African Night Flight. It’s on Lodger, I think. It’s a David Bowie song that’s really a fun song. Hey Wade! What album is African Night Flight on?Wade: LodgerThat’s my favorite song now. It’s good.

What’s your favorite song of all time?

I don’t know. Something by Bowie, probably.

Tell me what you doing around this time last year?

We were getting ready to go on tour with Jet. It think we left February 18th. It was fun. It was really, really fun. It was scary because we were only used to playing little clubs. These shows were 800 -1500 seats. It was a seven and a half week tour. It was routed for a bus but we did it in a van so it was crazy. Those guys were really sweet. We had a lot of fun.

How was your reception on that tour?

We got a pretty good reception, but I think it had something to do with people being like “Aw. These guys are trying.”

But not as good as tonight?

I don’t know. Did we get a good reception?

Yeah.

Nice.

You would know better than I would though.

I couldn’t see shit. Whoever was doing the lights kept lowering them for dramatic pauses. It was really weird. I was confused because all the lights would go down, but it wasn’t a slow song.

One of your songs was on played on Gossip Girl, right?

They actually played five songs.

How do you feel about that? Was it cool for you? Were people saying that you sold out?Well you know, we’re broke so whenever someone offers us money to play our music we definitely think it’s pretty cool.

Do you watch the show?

I watched our episode. It was pretty awesome. In the part when they played Rich Girls this dude was having a big fight with his parents and he goes to lie down on the couch he’s brooding to Rich Girls. It seems like a really weird match.

What about Entourage?

Entourage is my favorite TV show, so that was really exciting. That one came first actually. I like doing all that kind of commercial stuff. It’s really fun. I hope we get to do more of that.

What’s your connection with what was A New York Thing?

It’s called Off Bowery now. A-ron and I have just been really good friends for ten or eleven years. He started up aNYthing just when we were starting, and now that he has Off Bowery were going to do the same thing. We’re going to go play a show at his new space, this crazy space in the city called The Fuck Shop and were going to play there when we get home.

Any plans for the future?

We just finished recording our album. It’s supposed to come out in April so were planning for that to happen.
