JASON POLAN

untitled-1.jpgI think I first saw Jason’s work when Jack Spade released that comic book documenting the robber who broke into their store on a few occasions and was intrigued by his quirky drawing style.  I eventually figured out he was the guy behind the drawings and ended up art his website and was more than impressed.  There are a bunch of interesting projects on there to buy and everything is really affordable.  Above, is one of my favorites  - drawings of every single piece in the MOMA  in January 2005.  Check his work out here.

AIDS-3D

cyberbondage3.jpg

22 year old artists, Daniel Keller and Nik Kosmas were born to rival advertising executives in the Midwest. Amazingly, on dates coinciding exactly with the winter and summer equinoxes. Despite this unsual coincidence, it was not until 2004 at an art therapy class for troubled youth that they finally met. Their therapist noted a compatibility in their star charts and recommended they collaborate and in the fall of 2006, they moved to Berlin and launched AIDS-3D.COM.  Interview by Hugh Alexander Scott-Douglas.

BEN SCHUMACHER

Recently releasing Don’t Look Down, a Tiny Vices Book with Tim Barber, Ben Schumacher creates art in many traditional and non tradition forms.  Whether it be through drawings or exploring new ways to conceptualize and present art via the internet, Ben’s work consistently intrigues and impresses.  Specifically of note are the Forts that he and his friends create, which he talks about below, as well as his plans to release another TV book featuring photos taken from the Forts. O.H.W.O.W. PRESENTS IT AIN’T FAIR

iaf.jpg

After last year’s unofficial Art Basel boycott by some of my favorite artists, this year is shaping up to be impressive.  Al Moran and Aaron Bondaroff present their second exhibit at their Our House of West of Wynwood space in downtown Miami.  Feature all the usual suspects, this looks like its going to be a good one.  The exhibit runs from December 2-7.

A NEW BREED OF MODELS

kimmel.jpg

You know I’m a fan of Adam Kimmel’s deisgns and his past choices for models, and he does it again, but this time using older artists, actors and musicians.  Amongst those featured in his lookbook are actor Dennis Hopper (top left) and artists Don Bachardy (top left), Larry Bell (bottom left) and Semina artist, Geroge Herms with his son (bottom right).  I love that he uses “real people” for his lookbook.

TERENCE KOH

terence-koh-web.jpg

Terence Koh is one of the most fascinating artist to me.  He really embodies the term “Art Star” and I am always delighted and surprised with whatever he puts out.  From hand made zines to solo shows at some of the most well reputed galleries in the world, he manages to balance the sublime and the perverted.  I recently had the chance to ask Terence some questions, and as Terence routinely lies in his interviews and has some of the most entertaining responses, I though I would try and get a different perspective.  I asked some friends if there was anything they would want to ask Terence Koh if they had the chance and their questions are below. MALKIEL BERRY OF COLETTE

 c.jpg

As the PR director of Colette, Malkiel Berry is just 25 years old. Based in Paris, I knew I had to get a glimpse into the life of this young guy. I recently had the chance to chat with Malkiel about his role at Colette, what he learned at his previous stints at both Margiela and Pierre Hardy and what designers he has on his mind. FEAR GOD BY ARI MARCOPOULOS

untitled-2.jpg

The Project, NY brings in one of my favorite artist for a show this November, Ari Marcopoulos.  The show will consist of a bunch of lo-fi, photocopied photos and a webcam video.  Ari has always been know for working with low quality media and making it work, and I’m sure this is no exception.

The Project explains it better than I do:  “Selected from a vast and continuously expanding body of work, these images demonstrate how markings on the body—scars, bruises, and tattoos—often have broader significance as encoded signs of social affiliation and status within insular communities.  Similarly, graffiti in the urban landscape functions as a distinctly expressive residue of life which adorns otherwise banal architectural environments in an attempt to articulate public dissent from the status quo.  Fear God not only reveals Marcopoulos’ continued interest in documenting underground youth and street cultures, but also his perceptiveness in photographing them—originally seen in his early photographs of burgeoning hip hop and skateboarding scenes.”

The show opens on the 4th, at The Project.

EXCESSORY BAGGAGE

Just when you though LV appropriation was over…  Meryl Smith is amazing.  She made these ‘bags’ out of metal screen, paper mache, leather, gold paint and zipper as part of an exhibit where artists were required to create pieces to fit within the carry on baggage requirements.
