When traveling outside of Shanghai during the COVID-19 pandemic, you may need to do a PCR test.

A negative PCR test result within 48 hours before departure is needed in many cases, for example to enter Tibet or to travel to Harbin for the Ice Festival.

Different cities have different ways of calculating their timing rules for the PCR test. The strictest is that the test time must be within 48 hours before the time when you arrive at your destination. For example, if your flight arrives at Lhasa Gonggar Airport in Tibet at 2pm on January 3rd, the time you do the PCR test must be after 2pm on January 1st. It is not calculated from the time that you get the result. Usually, it takes about 6 hours to obtain the test result.
