The Shanghai to Xi'an high-speed rail line measures 1,387 kilometers (862 miles). There are 19 pairs of daytime high-speed trains (G trains) in service between Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Xi'an North Railway Station daily, with the travel time of 6 to 7.5 hours. It cost US$106 per adult to take second class seat.  

In addition, 11 pairs of normal-speed trains are also traveling between those two cities, with lower ticket prices and longer travel time of 15 to 20 hours. Soft sleeper on these normal-speed trains is US$71 per ticket.

How to Choose Train Type and Seat

G TrainThe G Train

G train – It is the fastest train between Shanghai and Xi’an. It takes around only 7 hours covering 1470 km (915 miles). G trains operate during day time. The terminal stations Shanghai Hongqiao and Xi’an North are far from downtown. Business class, first class and second class are available on a G train between Shanghai and Xi’an.

D train – There is only one overnight bullet train running between Shanghai and Xi’an. It is the second fastest train between Shanghai and Xi’an. Facilities on this train are modern and relatively new. Soft sleeper and second class are available on this train. Tickets fare is more expensive than it on ordinary trains.

Z train – Running between Shanghai Railway Station (central) and Xi’an Railway Station (central), Z train is the fastest train among ordinary trains. Soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat are available on all the trains between Shanghai and Xi’an. There is deluxe soft sleeper on one of the Z trains – Z40/Z94.

T train – There are two T trains running between Shanghai Railway Station (central) and Xi’an Railway Station (central). Type of seat includes soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat.

K train – K train is the slowest train among ordinary trains. It is not recommended if there are other options. Type of seat includes soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat.

How to Choose Train Station

Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station

All the G-category high-speed trains between Shanghai and Xi’an depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. This airport-like train station is very large and and it is one of the busiest stations in China.

Transportation to Shanghai Hongqiao Station

  • By bus: airport shuttle bus, Hongqiao Line 6, Hongqiao Line 7, Hongqiao Line 10
  • By subway: Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, Line 10

Shanghai Railway Station

Ordinary trains and the overnight bullet train depart from Shanghai Railway Station, which is centrally located, it is also large and busy.

Transportation to Shanghai Railway Station

  • By bus: 329, 573, 741, 822, 844, 955, airport line 5
  • By subway: Line 1, Line 2, Line 3

Xi’an Railway Station

Xi’an Railway Station is centrally located for all the ordinary trains between Xi’an and Shanghai. And it is the main train station for most of the ordinary trains in Xi’an.

Transportation to Xi’an Railway Station

  • By bus: 1, 2, airport shuttle bus line 2, 9, 13, 14, 25, 30, 40, 41, 42, 103, 105, 201, 231
  • By subway: Currently, there is no direct subway line to Xi’an Railway Station. The nearest subway station to Xi’an Railway Station is “Wulukou” Station, which can be reached by subway line 1.

Xi’an North Railway Station

The newly built Xi’an North Railway Station is far away from downtown, serving for most of the high-speed trains in Xi’an.

Transportation to Xi’an North Railway Station

  • By bus: 215, 229, 260, 263, 264, 265, 266
  • By subway: Line 1, Line 2

Xi’an South Railway Station

The newly-built Xi’an South Railway Station is located in Chang’an District and far away from downtown. Currently, there is no subway to Xi’an South Railway Station. The most convenient way is take a taxi.

  • By bus: 4-23, 920, 918

Useful Tips

  • Overnight train between Shanghai and Xi’an are very popular. It is advised that you book the tickets as early as possible, especially during holidays.
  • Shanghai Railway Station and Xi’an Railway Station are located in downtown, while Shanghai Hongqiao Station and Xi’an North Station are far from city center. Please pay attention when choosing trains.
