ADDED VALUE

Posted on | September 5, 2008 | No Comments

So the blogging’s been sparse and I don’t want to start regurgitating stuff, but this is more about the concept as a whole, rather than the product.  Anyways, I love HUgE magazine out of Japan and they always are on point with their spreads.  Sometimes those Japanese mags give little gifts out with the magazine too, like a towel or shirt or tote bag.  This one I am especially fond of.  A beatufiuly presented package of a comb and nail file from the Japanese brand W-Taps.  I love when brands do stuff like this, produce artisanal, interesting lifestyle products that they wouldn’t normal do, but I guess I’m a sucker for them.  Love ‘em or hate ‘em, I’ve always been a fan of what supreme puts out too - baseball bats, ash trays, lighters, flashlights and now boxing gloves.  I expect a lot of brands to be branching out like this in the future, as it helps brands establish them selves as something special, a little more than one of the hundreds of brands on the market.

I don’t know how blown up this site is, but either way It’s a good browse.  It’s mostly cute young hipster girls and skinny dudes posting their looks, but there are definitely some gems in there.  I particularly like this one of Jane from Dallas in a vintage dress and Balenciaga boot(ie)s.  The kids get pretty into it and there is some great art direction and photography in a bunch of the shots as well.  It’s crazy - you have some 16 year old kids decked out in head to toe Dior Homme and then others with good, if not better outfits costing under $20.

DEJOUR ENDORSES: ALBAM

Posted on | July 18, 2008 | No Comments

Albam does classics and they do them well. They follow the philosophy of “it doesn’t have to be radically different, just a lot better”.  Based in London, they operate solely on a mail order basis because they don’t believe in passing the costs on to the customer through a retailer so they manage to keep their cost fairly low for the quality you are getting.  Everything is hand made by classic purveyors of traditional manufacturing from the Oxfords and Dessert boots in England to my favorite from the collection, the high top boat shoes which are manufactured in Maine.  Rounding out the line are classic oxfords, Japanese denim and solid leather accessories.  I’m surprised I haven’t heard of them sooner.

YSL ROLLING SNEAKERS

Posted on | July 18, 2008 | 13 Comments

Despite being a little (or a lot) gaudy, the YSL version of SK8 His (called the Rolling) have been really doing it for me.  The Patent Black killed it when they came out and now there’s even more.  A subtle (not really) patent charcoal and burgundy are being released soon and apparently there’s also an emerald green pair.  Not bad at $400 compared to other designer sneakers.

CONSTANT ROTATION: ZEIGEIST

Posted on | July 18, 2008 | No Comments

Not exactly new (Release at the beginning of May this year), but I have been playing Zeigesit’s album The Jade Motel non stop recently.  Their a pretty weird trio from Stockholm and cite Matthew Barney, Comme des garçons, Peter Greenaway, Andy Warhol, David Lynch and Alexander McQueen as influences and if that doesn’t give you an idea of what they sound like(me neither), so just check out these MP3s.  Also, they have just been remixed by my favorite remixers, The Twelves and the outcome is dare I say, better than the original.  I also managed to make this post without a reference to The Knife until now.

GET TO KNOW: KAVA GORNA

I’m a big fan of NY based photogrpaher Kava Gorna.  She’s done a lot of good work in a bunch of noteworth publications (Jalouse, Hobo) and she shot the lookbook for Imitation of Christ.  Her photos have a really soft quality to them and her photos feature some interesting subject mater (Nate Lowman, above left).

OUR LEGACY

Posted on | July 2, 2008 | No Comments

Our Legacy is a brand that has really gotten me excited lately, so much that I even ordered a pair of their chinos online and I never, ever order stuff from overseas just because of the hassle.  Anyways my friend Ryan just did an interview with the guys and previews the new season.  The thing I like about this is that there is a story behind it.  The have developed a character Sean, an Oxford dropout who pursues the Paris art scene.  Check it out.

H(Y)R COLLECTIVE ISSUE 3

Also, their blog turned me on to a really cool concept.   Pre-worn APCs to give them autehntic distressing.  I mean I’ve been wearing mine for years and they have some good wear on them, but If your looking for a quick fix this sounds pretty cool, especially if they look this good.

ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDERSTERN ARE UNDEAD

picture-1.jpg

If you’ve recently seen David Slade’s arctic blood bath, 30 Days of Night, you may be in the mood for a vampire themed movie with a little more class, for vampires you’d actually want to go out with for a drink – maybe a bite. If that’s the case, you’ll want to check out Joradan Galland’s eclectic brainchild, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead, which somehow combines Shakespeare, Vampires, and a quest for the Holy Grail in a modern-day setting. “How,” you may rightly ask? We sat down Galland, to get the skinny. By Lars Bohr

WARHOL DENIED

Posted on | June 14, 2008 | 21 Comments

Stacked is the culmination of the two most recent series by Charles Lutz, “Denial & Acceptance” and “Sold”. The sculpture refers to Warhol’s box sculptures of the 1960’s as well as the trunks of the luxury manufacturer Louis Vuitton. These references could not be more contradictory, luxury versus domestic, mass production versus hand crafted, utilitarian versus decorative. Warhol’s box sculptures raised the everyday objects to the level of high art. Lutz takes the works a step further by raising them to the level of luxury, highlighting the absurdity of a Brillo, Heinz, Kellogg’s box becoming a status symbol. “Stacked” will be produced in a series of 7 plus one artist proof, each with it own unique color scheme and monogramming.

Interesting new work from Brookyln artist Charles Lutz.  He takes the classic LV trunks and turns them into boxes of blue collar commercial products.  Now I know his whole thing is working with Warhol’s peices but this seems like it’s been done 1000 times before.  I mean working with the LV monogram was done to death 5 years ago, but maybe his combing of the two brings an interesting aspect to it.

MOSCOT ELECTRIFIED

I’m a huge fan of Moscot’s eyewear for their classic yet relevant styling so It’s interesting to see their new release, inspired by artist, Chris Benz.  They come in peacock, cerulean, golden olive and orchid.  Not something I would wear, but cool none the less.  They kind of look like those Oakley Frogskins.

WHITE WILLIAMS

Posted on | June 9, 2008 | No Comments

White Williams is actually Joseph Williams and Joseph Williams makes really good music.  He release his album at the end of last year, Smoke and I must have been sleeping because I just realized how amazing it is.  It was all done in various sublets with his laptop and I like the organic sound it has.  I feel like if it was done in a studio it would have been quite as charming.    Its kind of melancholic but kind of hopeful and kind of reminds me of that time in the morning when it is pretty dusty and the sun is coming through the window.  I’m not good at describing this stuff, so jut listen to it yourself at his my space.  I can see Jerry Hsu using “New Violence” in one of his parts in a skate video.

PLEATED PANTS?

Everyone know that pleated pants are for senile old men and guys who hate their jobs, but I’m a huge fan of the look.  Patrik Ervell (left) does a good version and I especially like the Carin Wester version.  Start to worry when I begin to praise socks and sandals…

M. WARD + ZOOEY DESCHANEL = SHE & HIM

Posted on | May 27, 2008 | 19 Comments

I’ve been giving an un-proportionate amount of love to electronic based music lately so now it time to give some shine to real authentic music made with real instruments.  Enter She & Him.  Comprised of super cute actress Zooey Deschanel and a previous folk/indie/pop musician M. Ward.  I love their official Bio:

“The She & Him story begins when in 2006 , renowned one man band M. Ward, recorded a duet with a girl named Zooey Deschanel. A delightful recording session, the experience lead to a dialogue between the two about collaborating further. This, in turn, led to Deschanel admitting to secretly making dozens and dozens of home demos and hoarding them like acorns for the winter. Sick and tired of being stingy and secretive about music, Deschanel realized that if songs were acorns then this was indeed her wintertime: she sent the recordings to Ward and these demos became the basis for their first record, entitled Volume One.”

They craft really charing catchy country inspired pop songs that sound like they are lost treasures found in an attic from 30 or 40 years ago. They recently played to sold out audeinces in NY and LA and today they have anounced their North American tour:
